So this is Commander Cod, on shore leave, I suppose. Loosely based on another character, also named Commander Cod, that a friend and I invented a few years back.

Usually I tend to do 3d art with the assumption that I'll get all the way through it and actually animate it. That never happens, and it usually just ends in more and more unfinished crap piling up without any real expression or interesting-ness. So, in an effort to gain a little more 3d flexibility, I've resolved to try to do fewer, shorter projects, just trying to get in some sculpting practice.

So, this guy. He's a piranha fellow. He was going to have a hook in his lips, but I figured the hook and the cigar together would be too noisy, and I preferred the cigar. So the tattoo will have to do it.

I went overboard on the skin details and made plenty of mistakes, but as I said, it's a learning process. Good enough.

It's a trap!

I did throw together some rather wicked teeth for him, but as they didn't end up showing in the final pose, they never got past a very messy phase of modeling.

Cooler than hell! What program did you use to model it? I have been thinking about getting Lightwave 9, but I don't think you can make models like the one you have done here with that software.

Glad you like it. I modeled it entirely in Zbrush 3. I've never used Lightwave, but I don't think the two are designed for the same thing. In general, it's cool to have one of the really big, robust programs like Max, Maya, or Lightwave, and then one of the sculpting ones like Zbrush or Mudbox.

Either way, Zbrush is extremely fun. I highly recommend it.
