Well, here's another shot of my tockneff progression, this one offering a more clear view of his overall physiology. I really haven't done too terribly much since my last update (I blame World of Warcraft), just worked on detailing his legs, feet, and lower torso. Not counting a myriad of little fixes I hope I'll have the stamina to work through, I still must do his arms and the rest of his face.

And, because I'm a nerd, I shall expound a little more on what the tockneff are. This time, biology. Tockneff biology mostly incorporates insect and dinosaur traits, with some bird/echinoderm/snake thrown in. They inhale through spiracles which can be found in their arms and legs, inflating a single lung-like organ in their necks. Thick blood vessels surround the expansive neck lung, allowing for swift oxygen transmission. Tockneff skin (except for the retractable spiracle flaps, their crest skin, and parts of the throat) is stiff and sturdy, capable of supporting their peculiar respiratory tubes.

Tockneff have extraordinarily acute nervous systems, allowing them to immediately detect and react to the movement of air around them. This makes them extremely effective at dodging physical blows and hard to surprise. Adding to their perception is an array of punktaugen, or simple eyes, which allow them to see movement and light changes over a nearly 360 degree viewing arc. These eyes are easily knocked out, however (and indeed, many tockneff collect the stolen eyes of their enemies as grisly trophies). They will regenerate in time.

Anyway, hope you enjoy.

I knew I wanted to see his feet for a reason! I can really see the insectile influence in those legs.(and the eyes!) I bet this being would have a very lithe, sneaky gait.

The details are very nice! I'm really digging that foot, and all the work along the spine and hips. I'm wondering if he has an internal bony skeleton or an exoskeleton?

And they knock each others eyes out? Ouch! *imagines tockneff playing a game of punktaugen marbles*

I think punktaugen is now one of my favorite words. Right after ootheca and er..spongium.

Glad you like it. Tockneff, while at rest, walk with their knees almost touching the ground, giving them a very stubby, ET-esque walk. When necessary, however, they can stand quite tall and move quite quickly.

The idea was that he has an endoskeleton, technically, but that his rigid skin acts as something of a pseudo-exoskeleton. I don't know that I pulled that off very well, adding all the skin folds like I did. He doesn't look very durable, in places.

And punktaugen is a very cool word. German for 'point eye', of course. As far as I can tell, it's the correct term for the eyes I refer to. (It's certainly a correct term, but perhaps there is a latin term that's more correct for English speakers. If there is, a googling didn't reveal it to me)

...did you, perchance (out of curiosity) draw any influence from H.R. Giger? I just have to ask because of the notably "biomechanical" and Alien-ish look of the beast - not a bad thing, mind you, I'm just curious :3

No ma'am. Never heard of him/her, myself.

Wow, that looks incredible!
:iconazkitten:
Interesting, since your design bears remarkable resemblance to his signature "biomechanoid" style, particularly in the torso and hands/feet. The back view, especially, seems to invoke that particular feel.

Great minds think alike, I suppose :)

Haha it really does look quite Giger-like and biomecha. Dinosaurish even more, though..gut gemacht!:D
